Via Canadians for Equal Marriage: The equal marriage issue is heating up on Parliament Hill, and we need your help.

Although we’re ahead in the vote count, equal marriage opponents are asking Mr. Harper to delay the motion to re-open the debate. They want this delay so they have more time to mobilize against us.

Stephen Harper has confirmed he’ll hold a vote on re-opening equal marriage. So the only issue is when. How long will he delay that vote? Until he thinks he has the votes to win? Until after the next election?

Although we’re ahead in the vote count, opponents of equal marriage are pressing for a delay so they can take advantage of what they call “a window of opportunity” to pressure MPs to vote for re-opening the divisive marriage debate. This “window of opportunity” was noted by the newly resurrected Defend Marriage Coalition (See www.equal-marriage.ca/resource.php?id=491).

Equal marriage opponents are using this “window” to actively target MPs in Ottawa. They’re even hosting receptions for “supportive and persuadable” MPs!! One was hosted on Parliament Hill just a few weeks ago by Pat O’Brien’s group, Vote Marriage Canada.

Our action website makes it simple. You can also find your MP’s phone number. A phone call is worth 100 e-mails! Phone calls really get noticed, and all you have to say is something like “I support equal marriage and I want my MP to vote against re-opening this divisive debate. I’m sick and tired of this issue hanging over our heads. It’s time to move on.”

It’s important that MPs hear not only from equal marriage opponents, but from supporters as well. We know 2/3 of Canadians are against rolling back the clock on equality, but MPs may not believe that, if all they hear are calls to “restore traditional marriage.”

One thing is clear. MPs need to hear from constituents so they don’t let this slide. Mr. Harper can do what he wants if MPs aren’t hearing from us.
