April 12, 2007 BC Human Rights Committee Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Tracy (Chair), Craig, Carol (food), Kim, Deanna, Rhonda, Monica (minutes).

(a) HR Forum: Tracy is interested to take the lead this year

(b) Contest Poster prices: Kinko’s – overpriced. Staples, glossy, 5.99 square foot.; 18×24 = $18 (not $25); 11×17 = $1.55 colour, $2.65 card stock Monica to ask prices from PSAC & BC Fed Other details: entries to be numbered (no name attached) one person from each equity group as a judge (active members) Tracy (PWD), Craig (AB), Deanna (RV), Kim (GLBT)

(c) June 14th meeting should be ok: Steve or Amy to speak on National Day Against Homophobia, Alexander still okay to speak on Aboriginal Issues

3. PRIDE

  • Kim gave a thorough verbal report (please see her attached written report)
  • on the resolutions that BCHRC submitted: combined into composites, 1A
  • proactive on GLBT issues, concurrence; carried; Census – carried; EEA – study, no lobbying yet, tabled - some discussion on how the study will be conducted to ensure a true reflection
  • others commented on need for MS awareness self-identification.
  • BCHRC agreed to also attach Terri Lee’s report, as a guest to the PRIDE conference, to these minutes.

4. ACCESS

  • Carol, (on the Steering Committee for the conference) shared that there should be about 104 delegates
  • need to reach out to membership
  • deadline to apply May 10/07

5. Self-ID’s

  • Monica reported increases in numbers in all equity groups from last September ‘06
  • some discussion on the current numbers of committee members. The committee appreciates those who are active and would like to hear from other committee members. Let the committee know what you’re up to, and to get more involved! The committee is what the members make of it!
  • ask for follow-up from education committee re: May’s film night - importance to have a separate poster for committee meetings/events to help distinguish it more

6. PSAC AB achievements

  • Monica requested any members who are aware of PSAC Aboriginal members with particular achievements, of particular achievements the PSAC has achieved for Aboriginal issues, please forward before the end of April as requested for national input

7. Round

  • Carol & Rhonda commented on “Vaskai” celebration (fed the entire building) and wore their cultural garb & dance (traditional)
  • Kim requested endorsement from HRC to sit on Surrey Delta Langley m/s/c unanimously
  • Tracy, Rhonda - Rhonda, a lot in media, on ADHD learning disabilities, w/women’s work and support - Study found LD continues past childhood into adulthood
  • Note article in April 07 Canadian Living, Vancouver Sun last month, ALDA Conference April 25 on Granville – encourages local executive to attend
  • implications for education system
  • Craig – may be going to NAIM meeting, but conflicts with regional council meeting
  • Has been attending Ministry of education community meetings on model schools and wanting to segregate children with disabilities and those who are aboriginal
  • lots of dissension against this - by-and-large the aboriginal community is not supporting
  • aboriginal restorative justice – issues (damage control) – bad press -
  • note – ruling against TB is not providing adequate translation for those who are hearing impaired during a competitive process - forward to PWD & HRC
