1. We reviewed the poster contest information.
We discussed the format and information on the call out and it was decided the information should be rolled out in legal size for ease of reading. Members suggested that important points be bolded….ie. heading and paragraph that begins “As such”…..perhaps the closing as well. There were a couple of spelling errors that needed correction (it’s changed to its) and we decided to change the closing date to November 23, 2007 to allow for judging and finalization before the December event.
It was decided a meeting was needed for the sub-committee who would be judging to meet ASAP after November 23, 2007. No specific day was decided.
It was discussed to ask Monica to have the poster contest instructions sent to all locals as soon as possible.
2. December event planning:
Tracy indicated she needed to find out the contact telephone number of the individuals who planned the event in the past. Sargy indicated that she thought it was all done through the Maritime Labour Centre. Tracy will contact Monica and Jenny.
Tracy suggested we have someone from a political party come to talk about what they are doing to facilitate the ease of obtaining necessary drugs to be accepted for payment by our service provider (Sun Life). That perhaps we could send a letter to Adrian Dix (health critic) to see if he could attend and discuss the process of having drugs approved. It was discussed that we should pick a theme for the event and that then we can pick speakers appropriately. We will all think of ideas and individuals that we could invite to speak. This will be discussed at the next Human Rights Committee meeting.
3. Wanda submitted a well-detailed report regarding her attendance at the 2007 PSAC National Access Conference.
It is attached to these minutes. She talked to us about her experiences there and how the event impacted her. Craig added some of his own experiences and went over important resolutions that were carried. Carol attended also and indicated what a worthwhile conference it was. She briefly indicated what she learned about lobbying.
4. Tracy handed out flyers for us to post in our workplaces for a May Day Organizing Committee Forum discussion that was taking place on Thursday, September 13, 2007. This forum was going to have speakers from the General Strike Committee, Bus Riders Union, Filipino Nurses Support Group and Justicia.
5. Terri-Lee donated a shirt from the Ontario Human Rights Committee.
All in attendance had the opportunity to win this shirt. A name was drawn and it was won by Kim. She was delighted! Thanks to Terri-Lee.
Meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm. Next meeting is schedule for October 11, 2007 at 5:45 pm.
