Negotiations Update – Purolator Courier Walks Away from the Bargaining Table
Published by Patrick June 17th, 2009 in Bargaining, Canada Post / Purolator Tags: Bargaining, purolator.Negotiations between Purolator Courier and the Public Service Alliance of Canada were scheduled to resume June 15 to 17, 2009. However, the employer left the bargaining table on the second day before the end of the session.
Over the course of the 2 days, the parties reached agreement on the following issues:
- Reimbursement for safety shoes ($100 annually if required by the employer, $25 if not required)
- Paid leave of one day for the adoption of a child
- A Letter of Understanding dealing with vacation scheduling
- Travel allowance (current rate of 0.39 cents – if increased, higher rate to apply to the bargaining unit)
Outstanding items where agreement has not been reached yet include:
- Temporary Vacancies
- Effective date for new position with higher wage or number of hours
- Training Premium
- Opening hours to 2 Retail Stores
- Job Descriptions
- Harassment / Discrimination
- Duration
- Child Care
- Social Justice Fund
- Time Off in Lieu of Overtime
Items for which the Union is waiting for an answer from the employer include:
- Acting Pay
- Breaks
- Shift premium
- Weekend Premium
- Leave with Pay for Negotiations
- Overtime (part-time)
- Vacation
- Bereavement Leave
- Benefits and Pension
- Sick Leave
- Personal Days
- Longevity Premium
- Christmas Bonus
- Wages
- Classifications
The employer repeatedly demanded the Union table all outstanding monetary proposals. The Union had reserved on some items. The only items left without a detailed position are Wages and Classifications. Your bargaining team believes the employer should first deal with the above issues. The employer disagrees and walked away from the table. They advised your negotiator that they would be applying for conciliation.
Please contact a member of your bargaining team if you would like to discuss further.

Joanne Hay, Karen Hirst, Jo-Anne Oberg
