The BC Regional Council of the PSAC is committed to building an inclusive union. As one step in the fulfillment of this goal, the Regional Council is initiating a confidential self- identification process that all members would be welcome to participate in. At this time, the Alliance does not have a database of information on the equity/diversity make-up of its membership.

The purpose of a PSAC self-identification process

The purpose of a Public Service Alliance based, self-identification process in the British Columbia region will be to gather data that will enable the union to have an information base that is relevant to the equity and diversity members in our region. Access to this information will enable the PSAC to contact members from the Aboriginal, Racially Visible, Persons with Disabilities, Gay and Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgendered communities when a need is identified.

To name a few instances where this information is required:

When the PSAC is looking for members from the Racially Visible and/or Aboriginal community to participate in the PSAC Unity Conference;

When the PSAC is looking for members from the Persons with Disabilities community to participate in the PSAC Access Conference;

When the PSAC is looking for members from the Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered or Bisexual Community to participate in the CLC Pride and Solidarity Conference;

When the PSAC is seeking equity delegates to attend the PSAC Regional Convention, access to information collected by way of this self-identification process can be used to elicit nominations for potential delegates. Self-identification will also allow equity members to participate in the vote for a delegate to represent their interests on the convention floor;

When there is a need to set up a focus group for any of the equity/diversity groups to collect input on projects in which the PSAC may participate that are group specific;

When the Alliance is asked for membership participation to work with other unions or community groups on group specific activities;

To enable the Regional Coordinators (Aboriginal, Racially Visible, Persons with Disabilities and Gay/Lesbian/Transgendered/Bisexual) to have improved access to their constituents;

To allow targeted mail-out of group specific information to equity/diversity group members.

In the BC region we have also undertaken to search out our members who are under 30 years of age to make that important connection with Youth. For that reason we have added “Youth” as one of the groups for self-identification

Your participation is important,

Kay Sinclair, Regional Executive Vice-President – BC, Public Service Alliance of Canada, on behalf of the Youth and Equity Coordinators on the BC Regional Council
