The 2008 BC Union School took place from October 3rd – 5th at the Metrotown Hilton in Burnaby. The school theme was Building Our Union, Building Our Movement! Ensuring Labour’s Relevance in a Changing World.

A new format was introduced at this year’s school, providing members with 15 course topics to choose from, a different one for each day of the school. Courses covered a variety of topics from health and safety and equity, to popular economics and labour history, ensuring that there was something available for everyone. Over 2/3 of the participants indicated that this was their first union school and in some cases, their first union event! The new energy combined with the insight and knowledge of seasoned activists made for a dynamic and very successful school.

Participants were very enthusiastic about the new format and the panel speakers, Jim Sinclair President of the BC Federation of Labour and Dawn Black, MP for New Westminster Coquitlam. The speakers talked about the need to ensure that our voices are heard in the political area at all levels and also about the importance of building solidarity with marginalized and exploited workers, specifically migrant farmworkers. Jim talked with passion about the need to protect the health and safety rights of these works and the participants were visibly moved by the story that he shared about the recent and tragic deaths of farmworkers. The panelists received a standing ovation.

The names of all participants were entered into a draw for a chance to win customized union swag. The winners of the draw were Brenda Williams and Sarah Burns both of whom will have an item of customized union clothing made specifically for them with their names and the theme of this year’s union school. Congratulations to Brenda and Sarah!
