OpEd: Let’s compensate our health workers

But even by his own steamroller standards, Premier Campbell violated a basic covenant on the weekend by forcibly rewriting legal, negotiated contracts that were still in force. If he is not prepared to respect so basic a legal agreement, what other contracts is he prepared to rip up? This is not reform. It is legislative vandalism.
- Globe and Mail editorial on Bill 29, Jan. 30, 2002
Canada’s highest court has ruled that Premier Gordon Campbell’s “legislative vandalism” is illegal.
On Friday the Supreme Court of Canada looked at B.C. Liberal legislation that ripped up freely negotiated, legal collective agreements and rejected it.
It is a stunning and welcome repudiation of reprehensible actions that took away the jobs of about 8,000 health-care workers through privatization.
Those same workers, who were so terribly mistreated, should now be compensated by the Campbell government.
Upcoming: CHILD CARE - Let’s make it happen in Vancouver!

Vancouver Child Care Resource is losing half of its provincial funding at the end of April. Ten neighbourhood-based CCRR services that help families with referrals and subsidies, and give family child care providers training and business support, will be gone.
The Campbell government is also cutting 100% of the Westcoast Provincial Services budget. That means no more access to the unique Westcoast Resource Library that promotes diversity and multiculturalism outside of Vancouver. And, significantly reduced access to the Safe Spaces bullying prevention training for caregivers of 3-5 year olds.
Waitlists are growing and parent fees are rising. Families, child care providers and community leaders are not sitting still for these cuts to urgently-needed child care services.
Take action for child care!
Published by Patrick February 20th, 2007 in Childcare Tags: bc-liberals, budget, Childcare.Tuesday, February 20 is BC Budget Day. The Campbell government began this year by cutting the child care budget. Any announcements they make now will likely be one-time only, stopgap funding that does not even begin to fix the child care problems they’ve caused.
British Columbians are urged to flood the Campbell government with a strong message – restore child care funding and build a child care system!
Please take a moment to fax:
- Premier Gordon Campbell at 250-387-0087
- Minister of Finance Carole Taylor at 250-387-5594
- Minister of State for Child Care Linda Reid at 250-356-8337

Working families in every BC community need child care. The provincial government’s funding cuts and attacks on child care programs affects us all, but especially children in BC. By cutting child care funding again, the Campbell government has shown it doesn’t care about the future of our children or working families.
BC Fed: BC’s lowest paid workers deserve a raise
Published by Patrick November 2nd, 2006 in House of Labour, News / OpEd Tags: bc fed, bc-liberals, news.
Vancouver - It’s time to scrap the training wage and raise BC’s minimum wage to $10.00 per hour says B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair.
“BC’s lowest paid workers deserve a raise,” Sinclair said. “Minimum wage earners working full-time should earn enough to stay above the poverty line. That can only be achieved by immediately raising the minimum wage to at least $10.00 per hour.”
“The provincial government likes to crow about a booming economy, but it’s only booming for a few. BC’s lowest paid workers have been left behind,” Sinclair said. Sinclair’s comments came on the fifth anniversary of BC’s last increase to the minimum wage.
BC Fed Labour Day Message 2006
Published by Patrick August 28th, 2006 in House of Labour, News / OpEd Tags: bc fed, bc-liberals, labour-day, news.“Premier Campbell, give low income British Columbians a raise.”
Here’s a Labour Day challenge to Premier Gordon Campbell: give low income British Columbians a raise.
BC’s unions are challenging the Premier to take three simple steps to tackle inequality, poverty and homelessness: first, eliminate the training wage; second, raise the minimum wage, and third, increase welfare payments.
Polls show that despite strong economic growth, a majority of British Columbians feel the benefits are passing them by. They’re right.
In May 2006, Statistics Canada figures showed that BC’s average wage for full-time workers is below the Canadian average. So are personal savings and per person disposable income. Premier Campbell may believe BC is the “best place on earth,” but that’s hard to square with the fact that BC has the highest poverty rate in Canada.
