Upcoming: CHILD CARE - Let’s make it happen in Vancouver!

Vancouver Child Care Resource is losing half of its provincial funding at the end of April. Ten neighbourhood-based CCRR services that help families with referrals and subsidies, and give family child care providers training and business support, will be gone.
The Campbell government is also cutting 100% of the Westcoast Provincial Services budget. That means no more access to the unique Westcoast Resource Library that promotes diversity and multiculturalism outside of Vancouver. And, significantly reduced access to the Safe Spaces bullying prevention training for caregivers of 3-5 year olds.
Waitlists are growing and parent fees are rising. Families, child care providers and community leaders are not sitting still for these cuts to urgently-needed child care services.
BCGEU Aboriginal members call on fellow union members to support the Highway of Tears Awareness Walk.
Published by Patrick March 23rd, 2006 in Aboriginal, House of Labour, North BC Tags: Aboriginal, bcgeu, north, women.
The BCGEU Aboriginal Council is supporting this important initiative by distributing “Stop Violence Against Aboriginal Women†buttons, and gathering donations to support the walk.
Highway 16 from Prince Rupert to Prince George has been dubbed the “highway of tears†because of the heartbreak associated with the many cases of young women who have vanished or whose bodies have been found along the road. Most of the women have been Aboriginal.
The walk begins in Prince Rupert on Saturday, March 11, with the first steps taken by Florence Naziel, and other supporters. Florence is a 56-yearold grandmother from the Frog Clan of the Wet’suwet’en Nation. Her cousin’s daughter went missing along Highway 16. Florence is challenging herself to walk 20–30 kilometers a day and she invites anyone who wants to support her in her mission to honor the families of the missing or murdered women.
BCGEU calls strike vote over privatization plan

VICTORIA - The B.C. Liberal government has been told its $1 billion bonus fund for early settlements with unionized government employees won’t make up for further contracting out of provincial civil service jobs.
The 25,000-member B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union has responded to the government’s new bargaining structure in a traditional way, announcing a strike vote that is to be held over the next three weeks.
BCGEU president George Heyman said while he is encouraged by the government’s offer of signing bonuses and an end to the two-year wage freeze, a plan to privatize 700 more union positions is not acceptable.
