A message from the AEC
As a Local Officer, you hold a privileged position in our union. That is, you have a great influence on what members will think of their union. For the great majority of the membership, the credibility and the efficiency of the union depends on the Local’s ability to solve work‑related problems and to establish a healthy respect on the part of management towards the union.
Therefore, this Handbook* is designed to help you achieve these goals. It is not meant to replace the week‑end and advanced courses presently offered to Local Officers, but rather, to be used as a tool to help you better understand what is expected of you in your day‑to‑day work as Local Officers. It deals specifically with the Local’s role and the officer’s responsibilities within the Alliance and at the worksite. We are sure you will find it very valuable in your daily activities.
By your interests in the union and your efforts at carrying out the union’s responsibilities at the worksite, you are participating in a cause that is much bigger than ourselves. The worker’s cause is defended all across Canada and even abroad in embassies by brothers and sisters like yourselves, and we share with you the goal to make this union a union that we can all be proud of and that can best represent the membership’s interest.
If you have any suggestions on what other information would be valuable to you as Local Officers, please let us know.
In closing, we would like to wish you good luck and thank you for giving of your time and effort to our great cause.
